Working women percentage is on an increasing trend and that is a great thing to happen, thanks to two people earning in each family, lifestyle has improved and purchasing power of families has increased.
If you talk about what acts as a catalyst to the career path of woman or for that matter anyone, then it would be being a MBA. In two years you are groomed well to be part of corporate world.
Many of the working women are MBAs and are giving tough competition to men, however there are more challenges in their career path as compared to men and the main reason behind it is, taking care of family and raising children is their prime responsibility. Which of course is also the prime responsibility of men as well but when it comes to motherhood, time and involvement is higher than that of fatherhood. This is the point when young mother’s usually quit their lucrative careers for the love of their child. Come to think of it taking care of child is certainly more important than career, but you know what you can play both the roles with required dedication. Thanks to the MBA degree, there are many ways in which you can enjoy both roles in your life fully.
Abroad there are crèches in office itself where mothers can keep their child till the time they are working and in between can go and look after them. In India as well in companies like American Express and EnY same facility is available. However in case they are not functional in one’s office then no need to get disheartened, there are so many crèches in cities with such good facilities. Kids really enjoy there and learn to be independent at an early age which is very good for their personality development. Since number of families with both parents working is at an increasing trend the enrollment is also high in crèches and thus there is good company in abundance there.
Transfer of Job:
Before motherhood there is another stage which in several cases requires shifting from one city to another and thus change of job. Yes, you guessed it right, it is when a girls get married. These days however husbands are really understanding and even they shift to another city if it’s easier in their case. Whoever might change it, if you are working as a manager then there are jobs available in all major locations and hence life is set and post marriage things can be planned well. Whether in HR, Finance, Marketing or any other field usually good jobs are available in all cities and thus to have a work life balance and to be with your family and also to have a good career MBA is the way to go. However ofcourse it’s not restricted only to MBA even doctors, teachers etc have the same thing applicable in their case as well.
Here though would like to highlight, that we all know government jobs are sort after and really admired but transfers in their case and specially banks is a big challenge, there are so many cases where wives’ have to either stay away from family or have to quit job. Also once you started doing government job it might be difficult to adjust in private sector because the work load is much higher. Thus in my opinion if you are not fine with transfers and staying away from family then avoid government bank job.
Another reason why some of the girls refrain themselves from delving into corporate world is their safety point, we keep hearing cases of workplace sexual harassment etc. However such cases are on a downward trend and there are very strict rules in companies to take care of their female workforce. One advice on this though, before joining any company please do research on culture and reputation of the company, it would not only give you insights for safety point of view but also on what your career growth would be if you work for that company.
Work Life Balance:
Usually females have to look at the household work as well, though men of the house are understanding these days and support as far as possible in house hold work but still I believe a woman cannot be satisfied overall if she is neglecting house and pursuing career and thus comes the pressure of maintaining work life balance.
Working women have their own smart ways of doing things and thus getting time for every aspect of life. First of all delegate work, this is applicable for people residing in India as maids and domestic helps are available at really low rates. Things like washing dishes, cooking and cleaning of house all things should be done by maids. All one need to do is guide them and supervise their work. This gives a lot of mental piece and also gives you time to relax and thus concentrate more on your work. This way you are involved in household work but at a managerial level so to say, thus doing the supervision 🙂
You must have come across this phrase very often, on searching in Google its definition is an unacknowledged barrier to advancement in a profession, especially affecting women and members of minorities.
All of us who are working in corporate world would confide with this aspect, as per a recent survey it was found out that it will take another 80 years to completely get rid of the inequality women face in workplace! Well that is a long time however in current scenario women have to work harder than men to prove their mettle.
Come to think of it, it is not that difficult to showcase your talent. First of all be sure that the field you are in, you are passionate about. Say for example, if you are into promoting about books and you don’t love reading you cannot excel in the job you’ve chosen and thus be cautious when you are choosing your career field.
Say that you are into a field you are passionate about and you have tough competition, in order to not let the glass ceiling scenario affect you, all you need to do is follow two simple rules. The first one is don’t aim at being the best but rather aim at being excellent in whatever you do, if you are all the time comparing yourself with others and working according to it, best of you would not come out and thus the success you deserve you would not get. The second is that, these days it is more important to do smart work than hard work, in order to do it efficiently you need to know how to prioritize your work and give more time to the tasks which hold more importance.
Following these two rules you are bound to be successful and if still your work is not recognized then its loss of the company and not yours because there would be many companies to welcome you instead.
Feeling of independence:
Till now I was talking about the challenges working women are facing everyday but now it is time to talk about the driving force which inspires every women to work irrespective of all odds and that is feeling of independence. When you are able to bear your own expenses and do not have to depend on your father or husband for your expenses, rather your salary gives additional income to your family then the confidence you have is unmatched.
Would like to conclude saying this that no matter what the hurdled might be, if you want to make a successful career whether in job or doing your business just have faith in yourself and keep focus on your target and you would be what you want to be in life 🙂
